The coconut industry in the Philippines is currently undergoing a massive transformation, with the government and private sector aiming to reclaim the top global spot by 2028.
As of early 2026, the industry is a central pillar of the country’s agricultural strategy, focusing on shifting from raw copra exports to high-value processed products.
The government is implementing the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), which is backed by the Coconut Levy Fund. Key focus areas include:
Massive Replanting: The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has a target to plant 50 million trees in 2026 alone, part of a broader goal of 100 million new trees by 2028. This aims to replace “senile” (aging) trees that currently produce only a fraction of their potential
Value-Added Products: There is a heavy push to move beyond crude coconut oil. Growing export markets include:
Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO): The Philippines is a global leader in high-quality VCO
Activated Carbon: Processed from coconut shells for industrial and environmental use.
Coconut Water & Coco Sugar: Rising demand in health and wellness sectors
Intercropping & Diversification: To increase farmer income, the PCA and DTI are promoting “multi-cropping”—specifically integrating cacao or coffee under coconut canopies. This can potentially double a farmer’s net income per hectare
